Will Amitabh Bachchan be convincing as Tagore?
We heard that Argentinian filmmaker Pablo Cesar wishes to cast Amitabh Bachchan in a film which depicts the encounter of Rabindranath Tagore with writer Victoria Ocampo. If Bachchan agrees to sign on the dotted line, this could be one of his most memorable performances ever. The ‘angry young man’ has been supportive of films which aren’t mainstream masalaentertainers, like Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black and Rituparno Ghosh’s The Last Lear. Cesar’s Bengali/Spanish film titled Thinking of Him could be another such thoughtful film.
Bachchan has a strong connection with Bengal – not only was one of his first jobs in Calcutta, but wife Jaya also is a Bengali. So Amitabh’s command over the language is pretty strong too. He also has an inclination towards literature, thanks to his father, the late poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. What would be really interesting about this film is that we will get to hear Tagore’s soulful poetry in Bachchan’s expressive baritone. The only challenge for him to personify Tagore is to sport a full length beard and let go of his short trademark one. He did it earlier forPaa, a film close to his heart, so wethink he might not think twice about doing it again for what could be a role of a lifetime. Big B’s fans in Bengal would certainly love to see their hero enact their legend. Do you agree?
