That Girl in Yellow Boots Movie Review

That Girl in Yellow Boots Movie Review

Story:

The film is about a fair-skinned British girl Ruth (Kalki Koechlin) who comes to Mumbai in quest of her missing father. Her journey has several highs and lows as with each passing day she discovers an ugly truth of the life and her past. She works without permit and gets lost in the selfish ‘City of Dreams’ where every moment she is emotionally and physically exploited.

Analysis:

The film also has an undertone that playfully carries forward the story based in the underbelly of Mumbai. Her journey and her determination to find out about her roots forms the crux of the film and director Anurag Kashyap does a flawless job as a story teller. His tight hand at direction makes it more edgy than what it appears. Both Kalki and Anurag as writers of the film have managed to put a heart-touching story on screen which is perfectly helmed by Mr. Kashyap.

Performances:

Talking about the performances in the film and the actors in it totally take the film on a new high. Kalki Koechlin as the protagonist has totally carried the film on her shoulders and doesn’t disappoint them at all. Prashant Prakash and Gulshan Devaiya are flawless in their parts whereas veteran like Naseeruddin Shah has managed to prove his excellence with panache. Naseer’s short yet stunning cameo is powerful enough to long last in the back of your mind. Shiv Subramaniam and Makrand Deshpande’s cameo too are decent.

Technicalities:

Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography is another aspect that has added depth to this film. The film also has humor streaks that are instilled at right moments to maintain the balance of this emotional draining film.
Though the film isn’t the one that will interest the masala commercial film lovers but any one who sees it once will certainly be smitten by its sheer excellence. Anurag Kashyap as a filmmaker is slowly yet steadily coming up with films that are beyond the limits of commercial and critical aspects of cinema.

Plus Points:

Minus Points:

Final Word: Not to be missed
